Fine for CS/IT first-years, note-taking, web development, and light coursework. Aim for a Ryzen 5 / Core i5, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Skip anything with only 8GB soldered RAM if you can — you cannot upgrade it later.
Mid (₹45,000 – ₹80,000)
The sweet spot for most students. You get a current-gen Ryzen 5/7 or Core i5/i7, 16GB RAM, a fast SSD, and often an entry dedicated GPU. This bracket comfortably handles CAD for Civil/Mechanical and heavier IDEs for CS.
Premium (₹80,000+)
Worth it only if your branch leans on GPU-heavy work — 3D CAD, simulation, ML training, or rendering. Look for a dedicated RTX-class GPU, 16–32GB RAM, and strong cooling. If you are in CS and mostly write code, this money is better saved.
By branch
Your branch changes what "good enough" means more than any marketing spec sheet.
- CS / IT / AI-DS: Prioritize CPU performance and RAM. Running Docker, multiple VMs, big IDEs, and a dozen browser tabs eats memory long before it stresses a GPU. Target 16GB RAM (32GB if you can), a fast multi-core CPU, and a roomy SSD. A dedicated GPU is optional unless you are doing ML.
- Civil / Mechanical: Prioritize a dedicated GPU and CAD-friendly display. AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, and Revit lean on the GPU and benefit from a colour-accurate 15.6"+ screen. Aim for at least an entry RTX GPU, 16GB RAM, and good thermals.
- Electronics / ECE / EEE: A balanced mid-tier machine works well. MATLAB, Proteus, and simulation tools want a solid CPU and 16GB RAM; a modest GPU is a bonus, not a must.
- All branches: Battery life and weight matter more than students expect — you carry this between labs and lectures every day.
